A guy named Birsa was observed roaming the jungles and villages of Chotanagpur, Jharkhand, in 1895. People claimed he possessed magical talents, such as the ability to cure all diseases and multiply grain. Birsa said that God had destined him to save his people from distress and liberate them from the dikus' servitude (outsiders). As a result, thousands of people began to follow Birsa, believing that he was Bhagwan (God) and had come to answer all of their problems. Birsa was born into a Munda family, a tribal clan from Chottanagpur. His supporters, however, included Santhals and Oraons from the region. They were all dissatisfied with the changes and hardships they were experiencing under British rule in various ways. Their old life habits seemed to disappear, their livelihoods were threatened, and their religion appeared to be in danger.
