The rajas and taluqdars were recognised as zamindars under the conditions of the agreement. They were tasked with collecting rent from peasants and remitting revenue to the company. This was thought to ensure a steady cash flow into the company's coffers while encouraging the zamindars to invest in upgrading the land. In addition, because the state's revenue requirement would not be increased, the zamindar would gain from the increased land output.
