Tribal people practised Jhum cultivation.
Several tribal communities practised jhum cultivation, also known as shifting cultivation. This was done on small plots of land, mostly in forests. Cultivators cut treetops and burned foliage to allow sunlight to reach the ground to clear the land for agriculture. They would fertilize the earth with potash-containing ash from the burning. To prepare the soil for cultivation, the trees were cut with an axe and the soil was scratched with a hoe. Instead of ploughing the field and spreading the seeds, they broadcast or scatter them on it. Once the produce was ripe and harvested, they relocated to another field. For several years, a once-cultivated field sat fallow.
