Chief Minister Cavour led the movement to unify the regions of Italy. He was neither a revolutionary nor a democrat.
Cavour was the leader of the drive to unite the Italian regions. He was wealthy, well-educated, and neither revolutionary nor democratic. His French was far better than his Italian. Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrian armies in 1859 due to the political alliance Cavour organised with France. Many armed volunteers, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, entered the fight in addition to the official army. They paraded into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1860 and successfully rallied the local peasants to help them overthrow the Spanish authorities. Thus, Victor Emmanuel II was crowned king of United Italy in 1861.
