The Austrian Habsburgs controlled the North of Italy at the time, the centre by the Pope, and the southern areas by the Spanish Bourbon rulers. Many conflicts contributed to Italy's unification. Chief Minister Cavour formed a diplomatic partnership with France deftly. In 1859, Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrian soldiers. Under the leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi, a huge number of armed volunteers joined the unification campaign. They marched into South Italy in 1860, and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies succeeded in driving away from the Spanish rulers with the assistance of locals.
