‘Chipko movement is a programme started towards the conservation of forests. The Chipko movement started to conserve the trees of the northern Himalayan region of Uttarakhand by the local people of that region, particularly women, in 1973. It all started when the state government refused the local people to collect the forest products and allowed a company to exploit the forest. Then in 1974, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, the founder of this movement, organised rallies and asked people to hug trees to avoid cutting them down. Women came forward and hugged the trees for more than 4 days, and the contractors left the place. It all gave rise to our most known conservative: The Chipko movement.
