According to another poll, tribals make up 79% of those relocated in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand. Dams erected in independent India have also washed away vast swaths of tribal territory. There are 54 national parks in India, totalling 1,09,652 square kilometres. These places were previously occupied by tribals, who were eventually expelled. Adivasis lost their lands and primary sources of income. Many have moved to cities searching for work, where they work for meagre wages.
