The Salt March became the basis of the Civil Disobedience Movement. In 1930, Gandhi made 11 demands to Viceroy Irwin and gave him a deadline to accept the 11 demands. Irwin refused to accept the demands. Hence, Gandhi started the Dandi March on March 12th, 1930, to break the salt law. Gandhi thought that if he launched a movement on the national level to abolish the salt law, it could unite the nation because salt was an essential commodity that was consumed by the rich and poor alike. The salt tax revealed the oppressive face of British rule.
