The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on April 13, 1919, after a peaceful crowd had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, to protest against the arrest of Indian independence leaders Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr Satya Pal. Some people had gathered on the occasion of Baisakhi, unaware of the local government's curfew. General Dyer and his troops fired on the unarmed people, blocking the only exit of the Bagh.
