India faced enormous obstacles when it gained independence in August 1947. Eight million refugees from what is now Pakistan entered the nation as a result of the partition. Homes and employment had to be arranged for these refugees. Moreover, India had a sizable population of about 345 million in 1947. There were differences between the elite and poor castes and between the predominantly Hindu community and other religious Indians, which was another problem.
