According to Rigveda, the “God of fire” was Agni. During the Vedic age, Agni was one of the most popular gods, as evidenced by the number of hymns addressed to him in Rigveda. It was given more importance because the fire was the centre of all Vedic rituals. In terms of hierarchy, the fire was second only to Indra. All the sacrificial offerings of the Vedas were always offered to Agni and through him to other gods. Therefore, Agni was the primary recipient of all Vedic sacrifices.
