An Indigo Commission was set up to study the problems regarding the Indigo Movement. At the beginning of the 19th century, the British promoted the cultivation of indigo and made peasants sign contracts agreeing to cultivate indigo on at least 25% of their land. They were paid less and usually uneconomic prices. Later, with the arrival of woad dye, Indian indigo imports were banned in the European market, causing losses. Tired of this oppressive system, indigo farmers rebelled. Those who worked for the planters were socially boycotted, and the gomasthas—agents of planters—who came to collect rent were beaten up. As the protest spread, the British were forced to consider the situation as they didn’t want another revolt like that of 1857. Therefore, the British set up the Indigo Commission in response to it.
