The Santhals raised cocoons in Hazaribagh, located in the present-day state of Jharkhand. Silk traders dispatched their agents to collect the cocoons from the tribe members. The growers received between Rs 3 and Rs 4 per thousand cocoons. Their price was five times that at which they had purchased the goods. They shipped the products to Burdwan or Gaya. Middlemen who negotiated contracts between silk producers and exporters generated enormous sums. Tribal members who raised silk made a very meagre living. As a result, tribal people began to see markets and traders as their enemies. The exceptional quality of Indian silk and the high demand for it in European markets drove the growth of India's silk exports in the 18th century.
