During the monsoon, the Dhangar shepherds lived in the semi-arid, low-rainfall, poor-soil region of Maharashtra's central plateau, which was covered in prickly scrub. They were limited to growing only dry crops like bajra. By October, the Dhangars travelled west to the Konkan, a prosperous agricultural region with abundant rain and fertile land. After cutting the Kharif harvest, the Konkani peasants required the fields to be fertilised and prepared for the rabi harvest. Animal flocks from the Dhangar fed on the stubble and manured these fields. In exchange, the Konkani peasants supplied rice supplies, which the shepherds brought back to the plateau, where there was a food shortage.
