The Parsis in Bombay, including these two business tycoons, initially made their money from exports to China and the shipping of raw cotton to Britain. They were both regarded as India's first entrepreneurs. This was made possible in part by exports going through China and in part by raw material supplies from Britain. Dishaw Petit had sufficient knowledge of what an industrial empire required to prosper because he was a well-known businessman and the creator of the textile industry.
