Gandhi travelled to Champaran in 1917 to motivate peasants to rebel against the oppressive plantation system. In the Champaran district of Bihar, the indigo plantation system was so exploitative that the poor farmers struggled to make ends meet. They had to grow indigo and sell it to officials at low prices. Since the lands were only suitable for indigo cultivation, they could not cultivate any other crop either. Thus, they revolted with the help of Gandhi against the oppressive plantation system.
