General Pervez Musharraf declared himself the 'Chief Executive' of Pakistan in 1999 after leading a military coup to overthrow the democratically elected government in Pakistan. The army captured the Prime Minister and took power. He then held a referendum which he claimed would affirm his popularity. Even though he won the referendum, it did not follow the rules of the Constitution of Pakistan, and the circumstances under which he won were not genuinely democratic or fair. He further amended the Constitution and seized the executive power by bringing the cabinet under the control of the National Security Council, which military officials led.
