H T Colebrook described the conditions of the under-tenant farmers in 1806. Henry Thomas Colebrook was a Sanskrit scholar and orientalist. He wrote on the horrible living conditions of Bengal's under-tenants in 1806. Some of the wealthy ryots in Bengal's villages chose not to cultivate their land; instead, they rented it to other people (the undertenants), charging them exorbitant rent in return. The under-tenants, Colebrooke claimed, could never pay off their debts due to high rent and lived a miserable life.
