The length had extended to over 765,000 km by 1946. As the network expanded, deforestation took place on a massive scale. Around 35,000 trees were cut yearly in the Madras Presidency from the 1850s for sleepers. Forests were disappearing quickly, and in their place, extensive railway tracks emerged.
