Until 2000, all elections were won by a major political party called PRI in Mexico. The opposition challenged them in the polls but could never win. Besides the undue financial advantage that the PRI had, it was also known to use many dirty tricks to win elections. The media was also biased as they largely ignored the opposition's activities, except to criticise them.
