In the Mahalwari system, the village paid for the revenue. It was the collective responsibility of the villagers and the village headman to pay the full rent on time. In this system, the village headman was liable and responsible for the rent. The rent was divided equally as the farmers had a proportion of land on which they could collect rent, and then the total revenue was given to the village headman. Then the rent was collected by Britishers from the village headman.
