The massive import duties imposed on Indian textiles in the United Kingdom harmed trade. By the early nineteenth century, English textiles had totally overtaken Indian textiles in their traditional market. Weavers and spinners have been let off, although the establishment of spinning mills in several Indian cities has enabled many hand weavers to find work. Several Indian cities, including Solapur and Madura, have emerged as new and prominent weaving hubs. In 1854, the first spinning mill was erected in Bombay. Since the early nineteenth century, Bombay Port has been exporting cotton to China. As a result, Bombay was an ideal location for a spinning mill. Thousands of destitute artisans, weavers, peasants, and farmers have begun to migrate to the spinning mill town in quest of work.
