The Jallianwala Bagh is in the Punjabi city of Amritsar. The Amritsar Massacre, popularly known as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, occurred on April 13, 1919, a holy day known as Baisakhi. When the Rowlatt Act was implemented in 1919, there were several strikes and demonstrations in Punjab and throughout India. The British Indian government imposed martial law in the state of Punjab to suppress these demonstrations. Unaware of the prohibitory measures, a sizable crowd assembled on April 13 in the vicinity of the Bagh. Thousands of unarmed men, women, and children were shot at by the army when they circled, blocked exits, and started firing. In this incident, around 1000 individuals died.
