He was an influential and powerful ruler, and the because of his presence in Punjab, the English East India Company could not establish its presence in the region. Although, after he died in 1839, the British tried to seek this opportunity. Two prolonged battles were fought between the Company and the Sikh Kingdom. However, the Sikh Kingdom could not defeat the British, and Punjab was ultimately annexed in 1849.
