Mahatma Gandhi launched the Champaran Movement in support of Indigo peasants. Gandhi’s first intervention regarding the suffering of Indians under British rule was for the indigo farmers of Champaran. At the beginning of the 19th century, the British promoted the cultivation of indigo and made peasants sign contracts agreeing to cultivate indigo on at least 25% of their land. They were paid less and usually at uneconomical prices. The farmers who wanted to cultivate rice in the fertile land had no option. Later, with the arrival of woad dye, Indian indigo imports were banned in the European market, causing a loss. A peasant from Champaran persuaded Gandhi to come and experience the situation of these farmers. Gandhi came and studied the situation and supported their movement.
