After spending several years exploring China, he returned to Italy in 1295. Along with his knowledge of China and Asia, he brought a Chinese innovation to Italy—woodblock printing technology. Instead of books being created by scribes, books were now created by printing using wood blocks. Soon, this knowledge was transmitted from Italy to other parts of Europe. The printed copies were comparatively cheaper when compared with the handwritten editions, and merchants and students bought them.
