Massais, perhaps the best-known pastoral community in Africa, lives predominantly in East Africa. Their Massailand, before the colonial domination, was spread over an extensive area, stretching from north Kenya to the steppes of northern Tanzania. But in colonial times, their grazing grounds shrank drastically. Firstly, the Massailand was split into two halves by two European colonial powers, the British and German, in 1885. Afterwards, the colonial powers gradually seized their best grazing lands for their white settlements. And the community was relegated to a small arid zone in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania with poor pastures and uncertain rain.
