Detailed Solution

The above statement is True.
The ports of Surat and Hooghly were destroyed in the late 18th century as a result of the growing influence of European businesses on India. The port of Surat was significant before the British era. It connected India to Gulf and the Red Sea ports. At the same time, Hooghly connected India to the Southeast Asian ports. There was frequent marine traffic through these harbours. Involved in this export trade network were several Indian merchants and bankers. But in the 1750s, this network—which was run by Indian traders—fell apart. The district court granted trade monopoly and other concessions to Europeans. European colonists created the port of Bombay in the latter half of the 18th century. The historic merchant-run ports of Surat and Hooghly were subsequently destroyed.
