As soon as Vasco da Gama arrived in Calicut on the Malabar Coast on May 20, 1498, Portuguese colonialism got underway. He overcame the protests of bandits and met the Zamorin monarch of Calicut. Zamorin gave Arabia permission to conduct business in Calicut. However, Vasco da Gama was unable to cover both the cost of his products and the customs duties. When the expedition went unpaid, officials from Zamorin detained several of Vasco da Gama's troops. He became so incensed by this that he started kidnapping fishermen and Indians for ransom.
