Woodblock printing, or hand printing, originated in China within the first millennium of the Common Era(CE). Blocks of wood were carved, which were rubbed against paper or cloth with ink to create a print. This printing innovation travelled to Europe when a famous explorer, Marco Polo, went on an exploration trip to China. He introduced woodblock printing to Italy, from where it was transmitted to the rest of Europe. Books began to be produced using woodblocks. Those books were cheaper and increased the pace of producing books, making the technology popular. Besides books, textiles, playing cards, and religious pictures with texts were printed using woodblocks.
