The artificial caves were hollowed out of rocks in the past. Ajanta caves are man-made (artificial) caves formed by excavating mountains and painting the interiors. There were Buddhist monks living in those caves. Because the caves are dark, the paintings could have been done with torches or fire. The paints date back over 1500 years and are of botanical and mineral origin. The skilled work of the artists can be seen in the Ajanta paintings, but their identities are unknown. After the Barabar caves, enormous attempts were made in western India to build holy caves until the 6th century AD.
