The British exploited forests because of the increase in population in India in the 19th century. The increased population demand for food grains led to the clearing of forested lands for agriculture. In addition, the spread of railways also required deforested land to lay railway tracks and wood to lay railway sleepers. Wood was also used as fuel for the railway, which increased the pace of cutting trees. Thus, all these activities of the Britishers decreased the spread of forests.
