The community of Gujjar Bakarwals are actually from Kashmir. The Garhwal region of Uttarakhand is home to the Gujjars, originally from Jammu and Kashmir but made the hills of Uttarakhand their home in the 19th century. During the dreary cold months, the cattle herders lived in the dry forests of the Bhabar. Bhabar is a belt region south of the Siwalik range of the Himalayas, i.e., the foothills of Garhwal and Kumaon. The onset of summer creates conditions favourable for going higher than the Bhabar, where meadows are full of vegetation on which their cattle can graze.
