In 1835 following Macaulay’s minute, the English Education Act was introduced. Many British officials criticised the learning method in the East. They said the Eastern learning method was full of errors and unscientific. There were many arguments based on this. One of the most influential critics was Thomas Babington Macaulay. He said that India needed to be more civilised. He opined that the Eastern system of learning was incompatible with western knowledge. He suggested that the British government in India should stop wasting public money on promoting Oriental learning. Macaulay highlighted the need to teach the English language in India.
