A poet named Ilango authored the famous Tamil epic Silappadikaram around 1800 years ago. The oldest Tamil epic, Silapaddikaram, has 5,730 lines and is regarded as the finest work of early Tamil literature. The protagonist is Kovalan, a Puhar-based merchant who ignores his wife, Kannagi, in favour of a maid named Madhavi. He and Kannagi then left Puhar and travelled to Madurai, where King Pandya's court jewellers accused them of theft. The monarch sentenced Kovalan to death. As a result of this injustice, Kannagi, who still loved him, was furious and destroyed the entire city of Madurai.
