The oldest Tamil epic, Silapaddikaram, has 5,730 lines and is regarded as the finest work of early Tamil literature. The protagonist is Kovalan, a Puhar-based merchant who ignores his wife, Kannagi, in favour of a maid named Madhavi. He and Kannagi then left Puhar and travelled to Madurai, where King Pandya's court jewellers accused them of theft. The monarch sentenced Kovalan to death. As a result of this injustice, Kannagi, who still loved him, was furious and destroyed the entire city of Madurai.
