Swaraj was spread all over the country. The idea of Swaraj was interpreted differently by tribal peasants. Alluri Sitaram Raju, who was a tribal peasant, lived in Andhra Pradesh in the forest area of the Gudem hills. He initiated a militant guerilla movement because the colonial government had closed large forest areas so that nobody could enter these areas for grazing or cutting wood. Raju encouraged people to wear khadi and stop drinking while extolling the virtues of Mahatma Gandhi and the Non-Cooperation Movement. However, he also argued that using force, not non-violence, was the only way to free India.
