The indentured labourers had very few legal rights. In the nineteenth century, a new system of slavery was introduced in the form of indenture. Indentured labour is bonded labour under a contract. The contract was such that the worker was taken to a country by the employer instead of labour for a specified period. The labourers hoped to escape the impoverished conditions of their home country but landed in worse conditions in the new country because of the indenture. The plantations had conditions worse than what the migrants had been informed. They even had limited legal rights. As a result, indentured labourers from India often migrated to the Caribbean Islands.
