After the First World War, the winners, like the British, started to weaken the position of the Khalifa (caliph) or sultan of Turkey, whom Muslims looked at as their religious heads. Britain intended to weaken the position of Khalifa because Britain and other powers wanted to share the land ruled by Khalifa. However, this was an aggressive point for Indian Muslims, so they started opposing Britishers by applying the anti-British movement. The Ali brothers Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali launched the Khilafat movement in 1920 to restore the position of Khalifa in Turkey.
