In 1848, Frédéric Sorrieu, a French art creator, devised a sequence of four prints visualising his dream of a world made up of ‘Democratic and Social Republics’. In the first print of the series, the people of Europe and America were depicted– male and female of all age groups and social classes – walking on a long train and paying homage to the Statue of Liberty as they passed by it. During the French Revolution, most artists, including Sorrieu, considered Liberty as a female figure, indicated by the torch of Enlightenment she bore in one of her hands and the Declaration of the Rights of Man in the other.
