The plantation workers in Assam had their own understanding of Mahatma Gandhi and the idea of Swaraj. The meaning of freedom for plantation workers was to move out of an enclosed confined space. Because the colonial government had passed the Inland Emigration Act of 1859, under which plantation workers were not allowed to leave the tea estates without permission. When they came to know about the Non-Cooperation movement, thousands of them defied the dictated laws of the British and left the plantations for their homes.
