The Revolt of 1857 was caused for many reasons that made it inevitable.

The interference by the British in the religious matters of India created discontent among the people.

The annexation of states made rulers indifferent to the British rules, such as Jhansi, Awadh, Nagpur, etc.

The soldiers also shared resentment against the Britishers. The Indian soldiers faced discrimination in salaries, allowances, promotions, etc.

The immediate cause was the greased cartridges that had to be bitten before use. They were greased with the fats of pigs and cows. This turned the sepoys against colonial rule.

All these factors contributed to building a base of resentment against the British that erupted in the Revolt of 1857.
