The samantas were the military leaders and landholders during the medieval period. By the seventh century, there were powerful landlords or war leaders in several parts of the subcontinent. They were known as the samantas, or servants, of the existing rulers. They were supposed to support the kings militarily, attend their courts, and send gifts to their kings or other rulers. Samantas proclaimed themselves maha-samanta, maha-mandaleshvara (the great lord of a "circle" or territory), and so on as they grew in strength and wealth. They occasionally proclaimed their independence from their royal masters. The Rashtrakutas in the Deccan were one such group. At first, they were under the control of the Chalukyas of Karnataka.
