The Silappadikaram was composed by Ilango. Around 1800 years ago, a poet named Ilango penned the famous Tamil epic, the Silappadikaram. It tells the tale of Kovalan, a merchant from Puhar who neglected his wife Kannagi while falling in love with a courtesan named Madhavi. Later, he and Kannagi travelled to Madurai from Puhar, where the jeweller of the Pandya king falsely accused him of stealing. The king gave Kovalan a death sentence. This injustice infuriated Kannagi, who still loved him, and she then completely ruined Madurai.
