The Sri Lankan Tamils faced many challenges during majoritarian rule. In Sri Lanka, there are seventy-four per cent of Sinhala-speaking people, and eighteen per cent are Tamil-speaking people. The Tamil-speaking community is further divided into 'Sri Lankan Tamils' and 'Indian Tamils' (the people who went to Sri Lanka from India in earlier times). In 1956, the government of Sri Lanka passed an Act to approve the rule of the majority (Sinhala-speaking community). The only official language was taken to be Sinhala. The governments used preferential hiring practices favouring Sinhala candidates for government jobs and academic positions. According to a new constitution, the state promoted Buddhism. As a result of these changes, the Tamil-speaking community faced many challenges as they fought for basic rights to live in the country.
