Detailed Solution

The statement is true.
Due to majoritarianism, Sri Lanka faced tensions between two communities; the Sinhala-speaking community and the Tamil-speaking community known as Srilankan Tamils. The Srilankan Tamils felt alienated because of the miserable and inferior treatment they got from the government made by the Sinhala community. The Sinhala community enjoyed immense power and discriminated against the Tamils. In 1956, by passing an act, the Sinhala language was recognized as the only official language of the nation, thus neglecting the Srilankan Tamils and their culture. Even the government partially favoured the Sinhala community regarding university admissions and government jobs. A new constitution declared  ‘Buddhism’ as the country's official religion.
