One of India's oldest still-standing brick temples is the Bhitargaon Temple in Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh). It was constructed during the Gupta era in the fifth century. It is the earliest single-roofed terracotta Hindu temple still in existence. It has a lofty shikhara (spire), which paved the way for the elaborate temple construction of northern India in the Nagara style. One of the earliest applications of the semicircular entryway can be seen at the temple's inner sanctum's (garbhagriha) entrance.
