Mysore had increased prominence under formidable rulers such as Haidar Ali and his famed son Tipu Sultan. Mysore dominated the lucrative Malabar coast commerce, from which the Company purchased pepper and cardamom. Tipu also had close connections with the French in India and used their assistance to modernise his army.
