Workers in the coal mines were in the worst condition during colonial rule in India. Tribals went to work in the tea plantations of Assam and the coal mines in Bihar during the colonial period. Tea plantations began to appear in the late nineteenth century, and mining became an influential sector of the economy. The British hired numerous tribal people to work in coal mines in Bihar and tea plantations in Assam. They were hired through contractors, who gave them pitifully meagre money and forbade them from returning home.
