The Government of India passed the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 in September 2005. The Act provides guaranteed employment to adult members of rural households, for at least 100 days, who need employment and are willing to work in the fiscal year of unskilled manual labour. If the government fails in doing so, it will give unemployment allowance to the people.
