The Sri Lankan civil war ended in 2009. Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. The country has a diverse population. The major social groups are Sinhala speakers, who comprise 74 per cent of the population and Tamil speakers, who comprise about 18 per cent. Following independence, the leaders of the Sinhala Community established their dominance in the democratically elected government by their majority to establish Sinhala supremacy.
Consequently, the Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggled to assert their rights. They felt that the majoritarian rule thus set was not sensitive to their needs and feelings. This resulted in conflicts and further turned into a civil war. The civil war resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and disruption and a setback to the social and economic life of Sri Lanka. The civil war finally came to an end in 2009.
